IT'S FOOD DRIVE MONTH!

Throughout October we will gather food for the Burbank Temporary Aid Center (details below). 

Here are 3 passages of Scripture and my comments to help us think through what love for the poor is. 

1.) Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord,

and he will repay him for his deed.

Proverbs 19:17

There is no way you can ever “lend” something to God, but when we care for the poor God considers it a loan that he will pay back. Here we see that God loves and sees our generosity and it makes him rejoice. He also rejoices to meet the need of those who are less fortunate. 

2.) Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed,

for he shares his bread with the poor. 

Proverbs 22:9

Do you want to experience God’s blessing? Are you looking for God to bless you spiritually? Maybe financially or relationally? Just like many things in the Christian life we access the blessings of God (God’s generosity) through our personal generosity, especially to the poor. Here God calls it “sharing our bread.” What a great picture of benevolence!

3.) Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker,

but he who is generous to the needy honors him.

Proverbs 14:31

Here we see that those who are not generous to the poor are part of oppressing the poor. The poor are easy to take advantage of, they don’t have powerful people fighting for their rights and many poor folks end up in jail or the prison of an impoverished environment. Poverty is generational and nearly impossible to fix. So who will step in to serve? Us - the followers of the One who proclaimed good news to the poor!

So here we go again All Souls. You know what to do!
