A Mild Understatement.

A Mild Understatement. cover for post

I was reading the Bible this morning and came across Hebrews 7:26. I have always thought the way the writer (or translator) refers to Jesus here is a bit comical although he is being 100% true.

For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

Hebrews 7:26

“Indeed fitting?” Is this not the understatement of the year (millennia?) Six important truths about Jesus are told to us here.

1.) Jesus is fitting (like a key to a very particular lock.)

If the mysteries of the universe are locked up in the effects of sin and the fall, Jesus is the key. Jesus is the key that unlocks the deepest realities and biggest questions of our world.

2.) Jesus is Holy.

This means that at one level he is separate from his creation in purity and majesty. But without becoming unholy he enters his creation to become part of its story. A holy man has truly walked among us.

3.) Jesus is innocent.

Perfect innocence in every thought, word and deed. Not just innocent of one charge, but of all charges that could be leveled at a sinner. Therefore, he is not a sinner; although, he does seem to fraternize with them. We need an innocent sacrifice to save us from the fall and he succeeded from birth to death.

4.) Jesus is unstained

Jesus never sinned by commission (directly disobeying God) or omission (leaving undone what should have been done.) He also was not stained by the filth of the world. He had no cracks in the armor and no taste for what is evil. Although he passed through this world, this world did not pass through him leaving stains. But we are deeply stained. And we can’t get the stains out no matter what we do.

5.) Jesus is separated from sinners (in uniqueness, but not separate in relationship.)

He is completely unique because he is the Son of God, but also he is the ultimate man, the New Adam of a new kind of humanity. He is the promised Messiah and the suffering servant of Isaiah. He is the High Priest and the sacrifice. 100% unique among all the children of men.

6.) Jesus is exalted above the heavens

In doing this, he never ceases to be God. He is the second person of the Trinity and the ruler of the universe. He is all-knowing, all-powerful, almighty, infinite in size and perfect in wisdom. He is, simply put, the greatest power in the universe.

Now that you know who he is: talk to him, listen to him, run to him for help, pour out your heart, be honest about your frustrations, and above all else worship Him because he has taken his great power and begun to reign.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Harvey
