One Word Prayer

One Word Prayer cover for post

The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.”

And let the one who hears say, “Come.”

And let the one who is thirsty come;

let the one who desires take the water of life without price.

Revelation 22:17

The season of Advent is the time of year Christians set aside to meditate on the second coming of Christ. This season is about anticipation and longing for the world to be made right.

In the book of Revelation, the Apostle John teaches us a one word prayer for Advent. When he originally wrote the book of Revelation he wrote it in Greek. The prayer is one word in Greek.

It is the word erchomai (pronounced “air-co-my”). Three times in this one verse this prayer is prayed, commanded to pray and an invitation is made to pray. It is translated into English with the word, “come.”

First, the Holy Spirit and the Bride (The Church in heaven) in unison pray to Jesus,

“ERCHOMAI”

Second, we see a command for Christians on earth (those who hear the Word of the Gospel) to pray,

“ERCHOMAI”

Third, we see an invitation to the grace of God; to come and take the benefits of Jesus without price; to receive the gift of the first Advent (Jesus’ first coming),

“ERCHOMAI”

As we travel through this Advent season, may we pray this one word prayer for Jesus to come again. Make it a daily prayer when you don’t know what to pray. Pray this one word when you are stressed, confused, frustrated, shamed, sad, angry, or alone.

“ERCHOMAI”

All of our problems have been and will be solved through his Advents. His erchomai. So let us pray this each day until Christmas.

“ERCHOMAI”

Let this prayer center you this holiday season!

Grace and peace,

Pastor Harvey
