Put Not Your Trust In Princes
Date Published: 07 / 20 / 2024 |
Put not your trust in princes,
in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.
When his breath departs, he returns to the earth;
on that very day his plans perish.
Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord his God,
who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them,
who keeps faith forever.
Psalm 146:3-6
Well, here we are. Another election year in a deeply divided country. People are taking sides, believing the worst about the other side while deluding themselves about the flaws on their side.
This is not surprising.
The world does not have Jesus
so they are always looking for a
messiah figure to come
and heal the world.
I expect the world to act worldly when it comes to politics.
What surprises me is that Christians keep falling into the same worldly trap of politics and partisanship. I mean, we have the King, but like ancient Israel we reject the true King in favor of a king like the godless pagans. They rejected God’s word being spoken by the prophet Samuel and…
Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel… and said to him,
“Behold, you are old…. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel,
“Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.
1 Samuel 8:4-7
This was the beginning of the end - the downward spiral of Israel.
Many modern Christians are doing the same thing. Instead of looking to God for salvation and hope we look to politicians and human strategies.
As the church gets more partisan and more political we become less godly and more worldly.
May we be a church that takes politics lightly and God seriously.
God has told us that no fallen man or woman will fix this. Only the perfect Man at his return will heal this place. Stop listening to the news and the pundits and open His Word.
Put not your trust in princes
(AKA: presidents, senators, political parties, pundits, etc.
Grace and peace,
