What to pray During Holy Week

What to pray During Holy Week cover for post

What can you pray during Holy Week?

Is there a Psalm that talks about His death and resurrection and how it applies to our lives?

I’m glad you asked.

Psalm 16 is such a prayer.

The Old Testament King David is the author and he prays and sings this asking for God to preserve him and lead him. But he also adores God for his loving presence in his life.

“I say to the LORD

“You are my Lord;

I have no good apart from you.”

v. 2

He knows this goodness from God will be earned in the future by the One who is to come and will be granted him in the Messiah’s (Jesus’) death and resurrection.

Look at this powerful verse about David’s hope in Jesus:

“For you will not abandon my (David’s and your) soul to Sheol (aka the place of the dead) or let Your Holy ONE (Jesus Christ) see corruption (decay).”

v.10

In other words, David will be safe in life and death because the Messiah died, but his body did not decompose. He was raised on the third day.

Even The Apostle Peter quotes Psalm 16 as an Old Testament reference to the resurrection of Jesus (Acts 2:24-28).

So if you desire to see how Jesus’ resurrection is the most important thing in your life and in the life of the world, pray Psalm 16.

Psalm 16

1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.

2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;

  I have no good apart from you.”

3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,

  in whom is all my delight.

4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;

  their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out

  or take their names on my lips.

5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;

  you hold my lot.The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;

  indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;

  in the night also my heart instructs me.

8 I have set the Lord always before me;

  because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;

  my flesh also dwells secure.

10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,

  or let your holy one see corruption.

11 You make known to me the path of life;

  in your presence there is fullness of joy;

  at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Harvey
